Sunshine State Music Festivals Concert Band Events

For our inaugural year, we will be presenting our Concert Band Festivals performance for high school band programs. The festival staff is finishing up the final touches and details of an entire festival offering that will soon include Choirs, Dance Teams, Color Guards, Auxiliaries, Jazz Bands and Orchestras. The Contest

Each group must complete a registration application and remit a deposit of $125. The festival office will communicate with you and/or your travel planner with regard to your performance dates,times and “per student” fees assessed to each performing group.

frenchHorn-180-140The Festival host provides chairs, music stands, conductor’s podium and a selection of the larger percussion instruments. (see stage plot). Each group will be provided a stage plot and musical selection forms to fill out and submit no less than one week prior to your scheduled performance.

Upon arrival, at least one one hour prior to your group’s performance time,  a student guide will escort you to the Director’s station for check in. Here, you will turn in your conductor scores and receive the group wristbands for the awards ceremony, commemorative festival pins, and any last minute updates. In addition, your guide will take you on a tour of the facility to familiarize you with the surroundings.

Each band will be escorted to a warm-up area 45 minutes before your scheduled performance time. You will have 30 minutes to warm up. We request that your students leave their instrument cases on the bus for their personal and property safety. After your warm up time has expired, you will be escorted to the stage.

Each band is given a 30 minute performance slot. Each director can choose two (2) selections of adjudicated music. Please note that non-adjudicated pieces are NOT allowed. We recommend that the maximum performance time be 20 minutes in order to allow adequate time for set-up, tuning and our on-stage clinic offering from one (1) of the adjudicators. If you are performing selections of grade 5/6 music, you may request an expanded time slot to accommodate your needs. This request must be approved 45 days prior to the festival date.

Each band is required to provide three (3) original conductor’s scores for each piece. These scores will be used by the adjudicators and returned to you at the conclusion of your performance.

Each band will be judged using the Sunshine State Music Festivals judges sheet. All three (3) judges sheets are tallied together and averaged out for a final score. The band with the highest score in each class is the festival winner.

The Judges & Clinicians

The integrity of a competitive music festival is dependent upon the experience, reputation and character of the adjudicators and clinicians. The Sunshine State Music Festivals program attracts nationally acclaimed directors to serve as judges. We understand that a festival needs to provide more than just a “winner.”  These are precious opportunities to educate your students with the input and interaction with the very best musical minds in the country.

conductor-180-140Each performing group will get an “up close and personal” on-stage clinic at the conclusion of their performance. These clinics are designed to strengthen the educational value of our festival and our judges are able to seize these moments to encourage further growth, as well as reinforce the good work already achieved by the kids.
